In November 2021, a new little shop opened its doors in Banchory for the first time. Two and a half years later, Studio 1 continues to go from strength to strength. If you haven’t visited us before, read on to see what all the fuss is about!
Growing out of the success of the Banchory Arts and Crafts market the charity Banchory and District Initiatives realised there was a desire from both shoppers and creators for something more. A year round, locally sourced gift shop inspired by the joy and fun of the market. That little thrill when you find the perfect something. Knowing the story behind the beautiful thing. Meeting artists and makers, and picking up something truly unique and special. Nothing beats it!
Initially stocking art and gifts from eighteen makers, we are now the proud home of forty seven different artists and crafters. Here you can find everything from traditional art and photography to jewellery, from candles and pampering products to handbags, from pottery to home and garden furniture. Something for every taste, budget and occasion awaits inside the purple shop in Scott Skinner Square.

We have been described as a ‘Social Enterprise’, but what does that mean exactly? How does it differ from a charity? Simply put, a charity is a collection of individuals who work towards a noble goal. They give their time and energy to raise money and awareness for noble causes. A social enterprise takes this foundation, and adds to it by creating their own products to sell. Money raised from these sales is then reinvested into the charity to help it thrive and grow. Our range of Banchory souvenirs and gifts are designed to do just that. Tea towels, mugs, magnets and more, our Banchory merchandise sales help us keep the lights on and keep supporting our creative community.
Our locally created goodies work a little differently. In Studio 1, you can shop content in the knowledge that roughly 90% of every sale goes straight back to the artist. No multi billionaire will be building a rocket to Mars off the back of your purchases! Instead a talented and hardworking local does a very happy dance, and is able to carry on and create more. Anything we make above and beyond the cost of keeping the door open is invested right back into Banchory. Some of our projects include the annual Pipe Band Championship in May and the town Christmas Light Switch On. Our mission is to make Banchory the best little town in the North East, for residents and visitors alike.
The majority of our staff are volunteers. They freely give up their time and are dedicated to making the studio a welcoming place. Passionate about art and about community, all are artists themselves and are delighted to chat about their work. Looking for local knowledge? You’ve come to the right place. Residents and visitors alike often pop in for directions and recommendations, or just a good old natter.
We have a few more exciting plans coming up over the next few months including a new website, kids’ art workshops, a community art competition, an ‘UnFinished Object’ crafting group, and evening classes for adults. Next time you are passing by, why not pop in for a chat? We’d be delighted to show you around and hear YOUR ideas for keeping Banchory creative.
